Hello,

I have an External Hard Drive, which I generally used for backup. All of a sudden it started showing ‘Its not formatted, do you want to format’. It’s a 120GB Western Digital Drive. All my data resides on this drive. Unless and until I format my drive I am not able to use my files, but if I do it, I’ll lose my data.

Am I screwed?

Depending on your file system which was on your external drive, download any Data Recovery Software demo version and scan the drive, all recovery software demo versions scans your whole drive and lists the files which can be recovered using full version. Once you are able to see the files which you are looking for, then you can go ahead buying the full version and recover the data. Hope this solves your problem.

Recommend:
You can download the Data recovery software demo version

Thanks for your reply.

I have no idea about the File system. And how will I check as I am not able to access my drive at all. I am having Windows XP on my system. Will this help in knowing the file system of my drive?

Is there any software which doesn’t look for the file system, which would help in my situation?

I hope I get one…

Need not worry, Tamsyn; you can try using File Recovery Software which bypasses the file system on the drive and searches only for deleted data, missing data and raw data.

It would always be better to first try using the demo version and evaluate the chances of recovery and once you get confirmed that this is what you wanted then go for full version of the software to recover your data.

This would serve your purpose.
