My laptop was hit with a power surge from a lightening strike and now the machine would no longer turn on. I tried connecting to an external power source; the drive spins up but sounds clunky. This could mean that the motor is screwed up, but the data may still be intact.

I would like to recover all my personnel files off the drive.

Must be a mechanical fault. Please do not test the drive further for the cause of your precious and sensitive data.

You need to send the drive to Data Recovery Services company and ask them for a free evaluation of the media and know the chances of recovery after completion the evaluation.

Note:Repeatedly testing the drive can reduce the chances of recovery drastically causing permanent damage to data.

Thanks for your suggestions Salvager. A friend of mine had an experience of recovering his data from a data recovery firm and he had to pay a large amount for it.

I'm really stupid for not having backedup my data.

Is there any other solution for this, may be some recovery utility that can help me get back my data?

Data Recovery Software can help you in no way. Data Recovery Software can help only in case of a logical failure.

Data Recovery Services are expensive but when it comes to recovering of important data, its really worth.
