I have a Dell Power Edger 4100 with RAID 5.  The server will not boot.  2 drives are bad(1 and 3).  The drives were partitioned C and D.  C was for the OS and D for the data. The server only has 3 SCSI drives. If I stick an IDE drive in and boot from it, can I recover the data from drive 2?

Any suggestions.

Hi Calvin,

Are the drives logically bad or is it some physical damage? What ever the case may I would suggest you to contact RAID Recovery Services. They offer free evaluation. You can get a fair idea if the data is recoverable or not. Trying various alternatives may considerably reduce the chances of data recovery.

I don't know exactly, but my friend says that it is a logical failure. He also says that since 2 drives have gone bad the cannot be recovered.  Please help me, how do I get my data out of this failed RAID 5?

Yes, It is very difficult to recover data from a RAID 5 array with 2 failed drives, as it make very difficult to get parity information to read the data. Don't panic Calvin. Data Recovery technicians can recover your data. They employ specialised techniques and tools to get back the stuffs.
