Hi friends,

I am currently using two unidentical Western Digital 80GB, 8MB cache IDE drives in a RAID 1 configuration. I would like to run a RAID 0+1 setup. I have a couple of identical 40GB drives here. Is it possible to add them to the mix to get the performance benefit of striping, or must all 4 drives be identical?

Thanks

Hi Femi,

RAID 0+1 configuration offers the benefit of both striping and mirroring. RAID 0+1 is the excellent solution that requires high performance. Regarding adding the drives to the RAID array they need not be identical. You can add your 40GB hard drives to the present RAID 1 configuration and avail the benefit of striping. But the capacity of your newly created RAID configuration (0+1) will be S*N/2 where S=smallest drive in the array and N=number of drives in the array.

So, the data storage capacity of your RAID 0+1 with 4 hard drives will be 80GB (40*4/2). Hope, you have got answers for all your questions...!
