Worm is a self-replicating program that harms the network and consumes bandwidth. Worms do not stick top an application but instead they travel over a computer network and perform malicious actions. A worm acts as an agent to the computer virus or by itself cause damage to the system. Worms use the computer resources and possibly halt the system.

Worms have been broadly categorized into five types, namely:

  • Internet Worms
  • Email worms
  • IRC worms
  • Instant Messaging worms
  • File sharing networks worms
