Virus scanner as the name indicates is a program that searches the file system, mails and attachments for possible viruses. Virus scanner is a type anti-virus software/program which intends to detect a computer virus and makes an attempt to eliminate it.

Virus scanner searches applications and executable programs in the software for virus signatures. A virus scanner can search all the executables when a system is booted or scan a particular file when a change is made to it.
