Data Recovery Glossary > Universal Serial Bus (USB)

USB is an external interface standard for communication between a computer and external peripherals. It is used to connect keyboards, modems, game controllers, scanners, printers, digital cameras and many other removable media. USB is the most common type of computer port used in modern computers.

USB has completely replaced the serial and parallel ports, due to its high speed and reliability. USB hubs can connect 127 peripherals to a single USB port. USB connects the peripherals using bi-serial transmission and supports both low and medium bandwidth peripherals. USB has two versions:

  • USB 1.0: maximum transfer of 12 megabytes per second.
  • USB 2.0: maximum transfer rate of 480 megabytes per second.
