Data Recovery Glossary > Transfer rate

Transfer rate refers to the speed with which data is transferred from one device to another. Data transfer rate is measured in terms of bits, bytes or megabytes per second. Transfer rate is synonymously used with the term "throughput".

However a hard drive has the maximum transfer rate of 480mbps, while Internet Service Providers offer maximum data transfer rate of 1.5 mbps. The transfer rate of data primarily depends on the distance between the source and destination. Within a single computer transfer rate refers to the rate at which the disk drive sends and receives data from the controller. Transfer rate include the time taken to perform the activities like system processing, head switches, seeks, and actual transfer of the data.
