Data Recovery Glossary > Track

The operating system identifies the data stored on the hard disk on the basis of tracks, sectors and clusters. Track refers to the concentric circles on a disk platter that hold digital data. The tracks are further divided into sectors. A vertical collection of tracks is called a cylinder.

In simple words, track is a ring on a disk where data is stored. They are magnetic circular patterns on the disk surface to retrieve and record data. The data stored is accessed by the combination of tracks and sectors. The storage capacity of a track is measured in terms of Tracks Per Inch (TPI).
