Smart card is a small pocket sized electronic device with embedded integrated circuit that can store data and programs. Smart cards are widely used due to their extensive feature of enhanced security. In other words, smart card is a microprocessor card which provides security services. Smart Cards are used in applications like banking, insurance, storing digital cash, telephone calling, SIM's for mobile phones, payment cards, high-security identification and access control cards.

Smart Cards are similar to credit cards but additionally contain a microprocessor chip. All the information of the smart card is stored in this chip. In order to add information or retrieve information from a smart card, a smart card reader is used.
