Data Recovery Glossary > Seek Time

Seek Time refers to the time taken by a read/write head to find the location of the data stored on the hard disk. When a command is given to read or write data onto a hard disk, the read/write head has to move to the correct place to seek the data. This process is called "data seeking", and the time taken by the read/write head to find the correct place on the disk is called Seek Time.

Seek Time is measured in terms of milliseconds (ms). Seek time taken by the disk arm for moving from one location to another primarily depends on its current position. Seek Time is determined on the basis of data location in terms of tracks, sectors and cylinders.
