Recovery Glossary > Sector
A hard disk is divided into various sections to conveniently store data.
The smallest unit of storage on a hard disk is called Sector. The size
of a sector varies from one disk to another, this size is determined at
the time of formatting. One sector of a disk stores one user record of
data which is usually 512 bytes. An inaccessible sector of the disk is
called bad sector.
A group of 64 sectors is called a cluster. The data stored on the hard
disk is accessible and identified by the track and sector number, thus
sector is the smallest and most essential section of a hard disk. Number
of sectors per track is determined by the system type, the controller
capabilities and drive encoding method.
