Recovery Glossary > ScanDisk
ScanDisk is a disk analysis program used for DOS and Windows to check
and repair the file systems and bad clusters that are created when a program
aborts. ScanDisk is periodically run, to check the files stored on the
hard disk are correctly referenced and accessible. The first ScanDisk
tool was released in Microsoft DOS 6.2, it was a purely text-based program
called CHKDSK.
ScanDisk most commonly runs when a computer has been halted unexpectedly
and the files were not closed correctly and updated before the halt. ScanDisk
is responsible for disk maintenance, disk defragmentation and periodical
checks to maintain the hard disk in good repair. It automatically corrects
any errors it finds.
