Recovery Glossary > ROM
ROM stands for Read Only Memory. ROM is an integrated circuit chip containing
programs and data that can be accessed but not changed. It is a permanent
storage, and holds programs that must survive even after the computer
is switched off.
ROM contains the read only files the contents of which cannot be changed,
like BIOS. ROM is programmed during memory fabrication and cannot be reprogrammed.
It is a smaller part of computer memory that essentially stores operating
system information. ROM is non-volatile and contains information that
the computer uses while booting. Data to the ROM can be written using
the laser technology and requires special hardware to do so.
