Recovery Glossary > Platter
Platter is a metal disk mounted inside a fixed disk drive. A disk drive
contains several platters and each platter in turn requires two read/write
heads for accessing the data. Platter is a round magnetic plate made of
aluminum or glass and has a metal oxide coating that is sputtered on disk.
A single scratch on the platter can cause data loss.
Platters have a magnetic layer, which contain tiny domains of magnetization
that are designed to store information. A hard drive can have any number
of platters. Each platter is magnetized on either side to raise the storage
capacity of the hard drive. Platters inside the drive spin at high speed
facilitating recording and retrieving of data.
