Operating system acts as an interface between the user and the computer hardware. It's software on which the functioning of other software depends. Operating system facilitates the user to effectively utilize the computer resources like CPU, memory, storage devices etc. operating system is loaded into the computer with a boot program, and it supports various application programs. Application programs use the operating by making request for services through the API. The user can directly interact with an operating through the user interface like GUI. Some examples of operating system are Windows NT/XP, 2000, Linux, UNIX, Macintosh etc.

• Keeping track of files and directories
• Multi-tasking
• Recognizing input from the input devices
• Sending output to the display screen
• Sharing internal memory between multiple applications.
