Data Recovery Glossary > MTBF

MTBF stands for Mean Time before Failures. MTBF is the average time a device will work before it fails. MTBF is used to define the durability and reliability of a media like the hard drives and printers. MTBF is measured in hours and is between 300,000 to 1,200,000 hours for modern drives.

MTFB helps to figure out or predict the life of a hard drive. However, there are two different types of MTFB:

  • Theoretical MTBF: Drive failure figure here is estimated on the basis of the analysis of historical data of drives that already exist in the market.
  • Operational MTBF: here, the drive failure is ascertained on the basis of analysis for a drive model.
