Data Recovery Glossary > Interface

Interface is a software or hardware protocol that facilitates communication between hardware device, applications or different sections of a computer network. Interfaces are contained in the electronics of the disk controller and disk drive that administers the exchange of data between two entities. Some of the common interfaces are AT (IDE), SCSI and GUI of Microsoft Windows.

In general, interface refers to the hardware or software that enables electronic devices to share information. Interfaces can be broadly categorized into three types namely:

  • User interface
  • Software Interface
  • Hardware Interface
