Data Recovery Glossary > I/O (Input/Output)

I/O refers to the actions involved in accessing the computers stored digital data. For example, reading from a disk, writing to a printer, etc. It includes all the movement of data to and from the devices. Technically, Input/Output is the process of transferring data to and from a computer-controlled system. It involves the use of communication channels, operator interface devices, data acquisition devices or control interfaces.

The computers Central Processing unit controls all the input/output operations like sending data to other devices and receiving data from various devices. Devices such as keyboard and mouse are input-only devices while devices such as printer and monitor are output-only. A writable CD-ROM is both an input and an output device.
