Data Recovery Glossary > Hard drive

Hard drive is the primary storage device in personal computers, laptops, servers and mainframes. A hard drive spins, reads and writes data stored on one or more fixed disk platters. Hard drives are also known as hard disk drive and removable drives. They are used in all portable and stationary computer-based devices. Technically, hard drive is a non-volatile, digitally encoded data storage device that stores data on the magnetic surfaces of hard disk platters.

A hard drive is composed of read/write heads, head actuator, spindle motor, and platters. Hard drives have a high data storage capacity when compared to other devices like floppy disk etc. However, the storage capacity of a hard drive is measured in terms of Gigabyte.
