Recovery Glossary > File Allocation Table (FAT)
FAT stands for File Allocation System. FAT contains the information of
the contents of the file stored in a disk. In other words, FAT is a table
maintained by the operating system to keep a track about the disk space
(clusters) utilized by the files and the disk space available for future
allocation.
The FAT was created by Bill Gates and Marc McDonald in 1977 for managing
disks in Microsoft Disk BASIC. The FAT is an uncomplicated and is supported
by DOS and all operating system. FAT has various versions like FAT 12,
FAT 16, and FAT 32 etc.
