External hard drives are the hard disk connected to the system externally. External hard drives are used if placing a hard drive internally is not desirable. External hard drives require additional storage space hence are not widely used.

External hard drives are readily available otherwise they can be created by putting the standard hard drive in an external drive enclosure. External hard drive connection require three major types of protocol, namely

  • Native Drive Protocols
  • Direct Attach Serial Protocols
  • Network Protocols.
