Data Recovery Glossary > Directory

Directory is the collection of files and folders on the hard disk. It is an index of the files on the hard disk. A typical file system that contains thousands of files and folders and help in organizing them by keeping related files together is called a Directory. A directory may further contain directories called sub-directories which contain organized data.

Directories make it easier for the read/write head to access the data faster. When a directory contains sub-directories, then the main directory is called the root directory. The directories are saved in an organized manner and form a hierarchy or tree structure.
