Downtime refers to the period of time when the computer is not functioning due to system crash, operating system failure, hardware failure or application failure. It is the time when the system is unavailable for use due to scheduled maintenance or unexpected service interruption.

The major causes for system downtime are scheduled maintenance work and system crash. This unscheduled stoppage caused by malfunctioning have a major impact on the availability of the system for work.
