Recovery Glossary > Buffer Overflow
Buffer overflow occurs when a program tries to store more data into the
buffer than it can actually hold. Buffer overflow happens due to the mismatch
in processing rate between the producing and consuming processes.
Buffer overflow may result in a system crash or even loss or corruption
of data. When excess information is tried to store in the buffer, the
extra information which has to be move somewhere else, go to the adjacent
buffer and cause data corruption and overwriting. Buffer overflow is the
most common attack against applications and very dangerous one.
