Data Recovery Glossary > BIT

BIT is the abbreviation for Binary Digit. BIT is the smallest unit of information handled by a computer. A BIT can be either 1 or 0. These values or settings determine the make up of a byte of data. A group of 8 bits make a byte.

A BIT represents a 1 or 0 in a binary numerical, a true or false, high or low of electrical impulses, or a flag that is on or off. BIT contrast from a decimal digit, which may have a value from 0 to 9.
