Data Recovery Glossary > Average Seek Time

Average Seek Time is the average amount of time a disk drive takes to locate a specific track and sector. It refers to the time taken by a read/write head to move to a specific location.

Average Seek Time is computed dividing the time the head takes to complete a large number of random seeks by the number of seeks performed. Average Seek Time gives a good measure the speed of the drive in a multi-user environment where successive read/write head request are largely uncorrelated.
