Hello,

I recently re-partitioned my HDD to install Linux for a dual-boot with XP. But, when I restarted the computer it only boots Linux now, and has no option for windows.

I lost all the pictures, movies, music, etc…that I had on Windows XP pro. I would like to recover the whole partition or even just the data on it.

Which one of the software products would work for me?

Hi Akule,

I would like you to provide some more information regarding your issue,

  1. What was the file system of the drive in which windows was installed?
  2. May I also know the capacity of the drive?

This will help me in directing you in the right direction.

It’s a 200GB Hard Drive. Windows XP Pro was installed on an NTFS system, and was partitioned over with my new OS Ubuntu Fiesty Fawn.

It shows that the new Linux partition is the only one available with the whole HDD. Linux is the only thing I can boot, not windows anymore.

Please Help!

Hi Akule,

Thank you for providing the required information. It’s now clear that you have only one partition and windows has been formatted to Linux.

Since you want to recover data from Windows partition, you need to use Windows Data Recovery Software. As your drive is having single partition, I would recommend you to install the software on a healthy drive having windows operating system in it. Connect the drive from which you want to recover data as slave to the machine where you have installed the software and then proceed with the recovery process.
