What is meant by Tape deterioration?

Tape Deterioration is a situation in which the tape undergoes wear and tear, these wear and tear are caused because of chemical reaction between the magnetic oxide, lubricant, water vapour in the air and particles of dust and dirt from the air or tape head.

The condition under which the tape is stored plays a significant role in the deterioration of the tape. The manufacturers recommend tapes to be stored under at a temperature of about 20 degrees centigrade and relatively humidity of 50%.
