How to minimize tape failure?
Tape is a storage device which is made up of long strip of Magnetic Tape.
Tape failure can be minimized by following ways:
- Backup must be verified, as most of the backup software’s
read the backup after writing it is more time consuming but it is considered
very important when the data is very important and essential.
- Keeping the Tape in a safe place as this helps in protecting the
data due to fire accidents, floods or other natural calamities.
- Tapes must be stored in a safe place, and in a stable environment
without exposing the tapes to any magnetic materials as this may cause
data loss.
- More than one tape must be used for taking back up of the data.
- Tapes can be used 5000 to 500,000 times for taking back up depending
on the type of the tape, so the tape must be used in a proper manner
and when the tape about to be damaged it must not be used for taking
back up.
- The tape back up drive must be properly maintained and must be cleaned
from time to time. As there may be a problem created in the tapes if
there is a problem in the tape back up drive.
- The data present on the tape must be stored in different server or
to a different partition on the same server when the original information
is stored on the tape.
