Disk Mirroring

Disk mirroring creates two duplicate disks simultaneously with the same data. Disk mirroring is a bit expensive because it requires two disks to store same data. Disk mirroring provides maximum protection, if one disk fails the system instantly switch to another disk without any data loss or service hindrance.

In disk mirroring the data is replicated on two drives so that one is the mirror of another. All data written on the primary disk is also written on the secondary disk to avoid data loss. Disk mirroring is most suitable in on-line database systems, which require continuous access of critical data.

Apart from providing an additional copy of data, disk mirroring can allow each disk to be accessed separately for reading purpose. This reduces seek time and thereby increases the data access speed. RAID level 1 uses the technique of disk mirroring and offer consistent protection from data loss. The only drawback of disk mirroring is the inefficient use of disk space.
